The Independent Living (IL) movement was born from a radical demand for self-determination: Nothing About Us Without Us. Yet, as the movement has formalized, it has dangerously drifted toward clinical models, bureaucratic “blindness,” and a staggering lack of systemic accountability. Today, with an alarming national push and executive orders threatening to move disabled individuals back into institutional settings, the fight for our original values is more critical than ever before. Event Details
In this session of Judi’s Room, leaders from the Liberators for Justice coalition issue an urgent call to action. We will explore the history of Independent Living not just as a legacy, but as a roadmap for a future free from coercive “protections” like guardianship and the creeping tide of re-institutionalization.
The presentation will follow a strategic arc from history to action:
- Foundation & Recommitment: We open with the “Public Letter of Recommitment,” focusing on the essential shift from the Medical Model to the Social Model and the non-negotiable demand for 51%+ disability-led leadership.
- The Current Crisis: Teresa Torres will provide a direct look at the real-world impact of systemic blindness and how the status quo is failing the very people it was built to empower.
- The Path Forward: Jim Ward will outline actionable steps for legal, legislative, and systemic accountability to weed out guardianship and institutional bias.
Join us to discuss how we can move from complicity to liberation, centering the voices of those who refuse to be “managed” by the systems intended to support them.
