Eugene Street Theater for Youtube to launch “Boycott Normal Campaign”
Eugenians are invited in front of Eugene Chamber of Commerce:
Campaign asks “Can you be Crazier Than What is Called ‘Normal?”
Date: Monday, 10 October 2011 — World Mental Health Day and Columbus Day

The human rights group MindFreedom International (MFI) is inviting all Eugenians to a “peaceful street theater” for Youtube to launch a global campaign to “Boycott Normal.” Their location: In front of the Eugene Chamber of Commerce. The date: World Mental Health Day.
Said David Oaks, Director of MFI: “The US Chamber of Commerce is one of the main groups opposing action on the climate crisis. The undeniable truth is that the climate crisis means it’s time to question what is called normal. The Eugene branch of the Chamber refuses to speak out about the US Chamber’s unethical behavior. All Eugenians are invited to peacefully show us your ‘craziest’ for up to one minute. Our psychiatric survivor judges will decide if you can beat the irrationality of the Chamber of Commerce.”
Lined up so far are Eugenian’s showing their ‘craziest’ skits, poetry, dance. Leading the event is professional street theater activist KATINA ANDONIADIS of Laughing Matters.
The event has a serious side, too: The American Psychiatric Association is preparing to approve their new ‘label bible’ — Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) 5. MindFreedom asks why behavior destroying the planet never seems to get into these ever-expanding diagnosis guides.
MFI’s hope is that a nonviolent “flash mob” in front of Eugene’s Chamber of Commerce will question the so-called “normality” of doing NOTHING about the climate crisis. The resulting Youtube video will promote their Boycott Normal campaign, which culminates on 5 May 2012, the date the American Psychiatric Association gathers for their Annual Meeting in Philadelphia.
Said Oaks, “Everyone who cares about Earth is invited to 10/10 at 4 pm. For the benefit of humanity, this campaign was initiated by survivors of psychiatric abuse who have successfully resisted attempts by the richest corporations in history to control them. When humanity is caught like deer in the headlights right now, it’s time to ask the real experts in what is called ‘crazy’ for help!”
Background on Boycott Normal Launch
The campaign questions the way what is called “normal” is causing and allowing a Climate Crisis unprecedented in human history. And the campaign questions the way the psychiatric industry is manufacturing new labels, except for destroying the planet.
The Boycott Normal Campaign also encourages people to tell their story to give young people given psychiatric know. Said Oaks, “There is life after labels! It gets better for mental health consumers, too.”

The US Chamber of Commerce is one of the main organizations blocking action on the climate crisis. MindFreedom asked the local branch to end its silence about this. For a year MFI have tried dialogue with Dave Hauser, head of the Eugene Chamber, but he has refused to speak out about the US Chamber.
The campaign asks: If crazy exists, is it possible to be “crazier” than blocking action on the climate crisis? You can try that day, 10/10, and “judges” complete with white wigs, robes and gavels will vote.
Said Oaks, “A Eugene City Councilor told the world that Eugene likes to celebrate the ‘strange and weird.’ Well, the Eugene Chamber of Commerce exhibits some of the strangest and weirdest behavior we have ever seen. Celebrate at the 10/10 event at the Chamber of Commerce, 14th & Willamette, at 4 pm, rain or shine, bring friends! Afterwards we head — where else — to Ken Kesey Plaza to celebrate the Boycott Normal Campaign, and the 25th anniversary of MindFreedom International based here in Eugene, Oregon.”
