BonkersFest! is a showcase of mad creativity providing a day of inspiring performance, art and music for the whole community. Camberwell-based charity Creative Routes (as seen on BBC 1’s Inside Out, BBC 3’s I Love Being Mad documentary, Channel 5’s Mad for Poetry, and BBC 2’s Balderdash & Piffle, and featured in The Independent on Sunday magazine’s mental health special) is an award winning interdisciplinary arts organisation run by, and for, survivors of the mental health system and of mental distress. It aims to dissolve the stigma of mental illness by encouraging the unique creativity of mad people, promoting mental well-being and the acceptance of individuality in the wider community. Creative Routes’ patrons include Poet Laureate Andrew Motion, and Young Vic Theatre’s Artistic Director David Lan.
Last year, funny woman and former psychiatric nurse Jo Brand opened BonkersFest! by firing a banana-laden cannon; this year sees an equally high profile name doing the same.
Visitors to BonkersFest! 2008 will experience a diverse range of specially commissioned audio, visual, sensory and interactive creative works and performances challenging what it is to be ‘normal’ and presenting an alternative experience of the mad reality. As with last year, there’s live music all day in both a Big Top and Little Top (all acts TBA). There’s also a theatre tent, fairground rides, acrobats, The Wild Hunt Bedlam Morris Dancers, The London School of Samba, and loads more entertainment suitable for all the family. There will also be various information and book stalls, plus therapy tents promoting mental well-being and the awareness of mental health issues.
BonkersFest! is developed and managed by Creative Routes in partnership with the Young Vic, South London and Maudsley NHS Hospital Trust (SLaM), Attitude is Everything, Shape, South London Gallery, Mad Pride, Mental Fight Club, Core Arts, Continental Drifts and Nomadic Collaborations amongst others.
