Description:
David W. Oaks, Director of MindFreedom International, will be speaking about breaking the silence surrounding mental and emotional health, the extreme shortcomings of today’s psychiatric care system, and the intersection of attitudes surrounding disability and mental health.
David describes himself as a “psychiatric survivor.”
After psychiatric institutionalizations as scholarship student at Harvard in the 1970’s, the university placed him as an intern in a mental health activist organization. Since then, for 36 years, he’s been a community organizer in the ‘mad movement’ for human rights and alternatives in mental health. David directs MindFreedom International, an independent nonprofit coalition based in Oregon, with a mission statement calling for a “nonviolent revolution” in the mental health system.
