Uniting Through the Power of Understanding: What We Have in Common & Resolving Perceived Differences

Join us for a free, online discussion group, the fourth in an educational series called ‘Judi’sRoom’ in the spirit of Judi Chamberlin, a collaboration between MindFreedom International and “I Love you, Lead On”

Discussed will be the themes that unite us in our fight to have the supports needed to live a quality of life in community rather than having no other choice but congregate living settings.  The presenters, will speak from their years of personal experience as activists to discuss what is needed now and what might we do to advance our mutual goals in cross disability alliances. Their presentations will be followed.

Facilitator:  Ron Bassman, Executive Director MindFreedom International

Ron is a Psychiatric Survivor who was twice hospitalized for schizophrenia and later earned his PhD in psychology.  His work and life have centered on the rights of all people to have genuine choices and to oppose involuntary treatments.

Presenters:

David Oaks is a long term activist and co-founder of MindFreedom International.  After an accident resulting in his becoming quadriplegic, he has expanded his activism through his founding of https://aciu.info/  A Confluence of Movements for Sustainability and Disability

Janine Bertram is a retired Marketing and Communications Consultant who worked for the civil rights of disabled people starting in1985..  In 2014 and 2015 she co-managed The Road to Freedom Bus Tour, a 38 state tour of the United States in honor of the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Her current work and interest is in Inclusive Disaster Management and learning about and supporting disability justice led by People of Color. She has a spinal cord injury. She is committed to abolition and freedom for all people. She lives near Seattle, Washington.

Tom Olin is a long time disability activist and member of ADAPT whose historic photographs document the struggle for rights and the fight for passage of the ADA. Tom’s current work centers on exposing the dangers and the abolition of forced congregate living spaces and the need for all people to have the opportunity to live in communities of their choice
