MindFreedom has been asking the State of Oregon why we are one of the very few USA states with zero — 0 — funding for the state-wide voice of mental health consumers and psychiatric survivors. Here’s where you can find additional information on this very good question!

On 6 July 2009, Richard Harris — on behalf of Oregon’s mental health system — sent out a letter saying the budget turned out to be not all that bad, as was feared, for Oregon’s mental health system. On this same day, David Oaks sent a letter to Mr. Harris asking “why zero?” That is, if the budget is better than thought, then why is Oregon still one of the few states to have zero funding for the state-wide voice of mental health consumers and psychiatric survivors? Text of letter from Oregon Mental Health System About Budget
On 6 July 2009, a representative of the State of Oregon mental health system — Richard Harris — sent a letter saying that the Oregon legislative session budget funded a number of mental health programs. MindFreedom director David Oaks has written to Mr. Harris asking, “why zero?” That is, why, even though the budget was not as bad as expected, is there still zero for the state-wide voice in Oregon of, by and for mental health consumers and psychiatric survivors.
MindFreedom to Oregon mental health system: Why still zero?
On 6 July 2009, the Oregon mental health system issued a letter saying the budget was not as bad as they thought for the mental health system. Here, MindFreedom director David Oaks asks “why zero”? Why, if the budget was better than expected, why is there still zero funding in Oregon for the state-wide voice of mental health consumers and psychiatric survivors? Oregon is one of the very few states with zero funding for this state-wide voice. Meanwhile, Oregon is one of the very few states actually building a brand new large psychiatric institution.
