STOP THE FORCED DRUGGING OF DONNA JEANS

Donna Jeans is a psychiatric survivor living in the UK.  Although she is not a danger to herself or her community, she is being forcibly injected with the neuroleptic drug Seroquel every week.  Donna is requesting a Shield Alert be issued to demand that she be allowed to switch to an oral tablet so that she can taper off the drug.

Donna enjoys writing poetry (she has recently published poems online) and playing instruments such as the Celtic drum, the Persian drum, the tambourine, and the lyre.  Because neuroleptics are major tranquilizers that cause severe sedation, they interfere with the concentration needed to perform these activities.

Additionally, neuroleptics can have negative effects that seriously reduce one’s quality of life.  One of these effects is urinary dysfunction, which not only leads to infections but can cause urinary incontinence or bladder retention.  Severe bladder retention is a medical emergency that requires draining of the bladder to prevent it from bursting.  Other effects include dystonia (a neurological disorder that causes the body to twist and move in painful and awkward ways) and tardive dyskinesia (a movement disorder that causes uncontrollable, repetitive muscle movements in the face, neck, arms and legs).  When tardive dyskinesia affects the tongue, the friction of the movements can lead to open sores that make it painful to eat.

Donna has already developed dystonia and may be experiencing tardive dyskinesia.  Immediate action is needed to prevent further damage to her health.

Call to Action: Please contact Dr Nicole Nunn and Dr Priya Reddy and demand that Donna Jeans be allowed to taper off Seroquel, starting by switching from injections to an oral tablet.
