MFI Shield volunteer Lily Naha has organized an emergency fundraiser to raise legal funds for Strawberry Hampton, a person who is “incarcerated in Logan Correctional Facility, Il, for crimes of poverty.”

You can go straight to the fundraiser HERE or read more about this urgent situation below.

The mission statement of MindFreedom International reads:

“In a spirit of mutual cooperation, MindFreedom leads a nonviolent revolution of freedom, equality, truth and human rights that unites people affected by the mental health system with movements for justice everywhere.”

The prison abolition movement, and the gay rights movement launched by Transgender and gender-noncomforming people (traced all the way back to people resisting arrest in a routine bar raid on the Stonewall Inn in New York City’s Greenwich Village) are all example of movements for social justice which MFI supports.

Lily writes,

“She (Strawberry) fought to get transferred out of a men’s prison, and succeeded, but in Logan she has received death threats from COs, been denied the education and mental health services the judge ordered the prison to provide to her, had her teeth broken, and been put in segregation/isolation for speaking out. She now has a civil suit against IDOC officials for these abuses which would set precedent for other inmates and hopefully move her closer to her release.
Her story has been covered by Angie Leventis of the Chicago Tribune, been written about in the advocacy of the MacArthur Justice Center, and some of the more recent events are described in human rights alerts at https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm_zF7lLfCb/
We are raising funds to cover her court fees, to get documentation and retain legal services, which is time-sensitive as her case is in the discovery phase.
To view some of Strawberry’s legal documentation that can safely be shared, click on the fundraising link at the top of this announcement.”
