About the Topic
Health Information Technology (HIT) is a growing field and affects anyone in touch with
a mental health medical system. Susan Houck and Ann Kasper will introduce the current
concepts of health information technology (HIT) in relation to mental health. Some of the topics
they will cover include:
1. The state of information technology and exchange in general and why mental health and
addictions may or may not be included
2. CIEs (Community Information Exchanges) and HIEs (Health Information Exchanges)
3. HIPAA (The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) privacy and security
4. CFR 42 Part 2
5. Health apps and digital therapeutics privacy and security
6. The recent $20 million SAMHSA (United State Substance Abuse and Mental Health
Administration) investment with the United States Office of the National Coordinator for
Health Information Technology (ONC)
7. How to join a health tech committee as a peer and/or family/natural supports advisor.
There will be also time for questions and conversation about health technology.
About the Presenters
Susan Houck Clark, BS, RHIT, CHTS-PW, CHTS-IM
Susan is a “Health IT Rock Star” and interoperability and cybersecurity policy
expert with 25 years of experience in health administration and health information
technology (HIT). She has worked in managed care, clinical operations, HIPAA
privacy and security, process/quality improvement, business process re-engineering, strategic
planning, project management, system implementation, practice transformation, and business
development. Susan establishes relationships with diverse groups of stakeholders in a variety of
settings. Susan likes black cats and cannot lie.
Ann Kasper, MA, CPSS, BD
Ann is a global peer advocate and a former State of Oregon Health Information
Technology Oversight Council (HITOC) member representing peer interests. She
has been employed as a digital peer senior outreach specialist, a warmline operator,
and a peer specialist in residential and inpatient hospital settings. She has advised
on the creation of hospitals, a mental health court and civil commitment statutes. She enjoys
teaching Japanese to squirmy preschoolers, instructing Mental Health and Hormones (How to
Hack Your Hormones) and working as a lived experience research advisor on a Rutgers’ study
of dental and mental health. She also likes cats and cannot lie.
About Judi’s Room
Named after celebrated human rights activist Judi Chamberlin, Judi’s Room is a free
event presented jointly by MindFreedom International (MFI) and “I Love You, Lead On” to
facilitate opportunities for ongoing cross-disability dialogue.
It typically begins with a presentation by one or more expert panelists followed by an open public discussion.
