MindFreedom members who volunteer to provide comfort calls are a beacon of light for those facing dark times in the mental health system. Lending your ear or helping draft human rights alerts can make all the difference. Anyone, anywhere: If you can, consider offering your much needed support.

Memo: From the desk of Heather Marek, MFI Volunteer

I recently returned to MFI after having left for a year. A lot has changed. Most notably, David Oaks, founder of MFI and long-time revolutionary, had to leave after a serious injury last winter. Of course, the office does not feel the same without his vibrant and creative energy.

But things have not been dull. We still receive countless calls from individuals needing help on a daily basis. Like days before, we still hear stories of people struggling with forced and coerced “treatments.”

Thankfully, we have been able to rely on members who have made themselves available to call folks in these difficult situations, lending a compassionate ear or sometimes helping draft a human rights alert.

For those of you who have come forward to share your time and humanity in this way, thank you. You help MindFreedom offer hope to people in dark moments. I think many of us appreciate how it feels to be in a situation where we need an ally or advocate. It can make all the difference.

For those who have considered offering support in this way and would like to get involved, we would love to hear from you.

If you are interested in volunteering to provide comfort calls, here is how you can go about it.

1) Make sure you are a current MindFreedom member. You can do this by visiting www.mindfreedom.org/join-donate.

2) Email us to say that you are interested and would like more information at office(at)mindfreedom.org

I look forward to hearing from you!

In solidarity,

Heather Marek
