“Thank you, thank you, MindFreedom!” says Elizabeth Ellis, 67, a retired Minnesota teacher, who won her main goals: She has returned home, free of forced electroshocks. After 13 involuntary court-ordered electroshocks, including one on an outpatient basis, MFI launched a campaign for Elizabeth, and she has won.
On 22 April 2011, City of Eugene police officer Chris Kilcullen was shot and killed by an individual who has confessed. The media identified the shooter as an individual with a long mental health history. “Officer Chris” as he liked to be called was a leader in including people diagnosed with mental health disabilities in crisis intervention training with the police. The local community of mental health consumers and psychiatric survivors has issued a public statement.

Victory: FDA Panel Votes to Require Testing of ECT Device After Survivors Testify at FDA Electroshock Hearing
GAITHERSBURG, MD: A panel for the US Food & Drug Administration voted to ask the FDA to require testing of the device used for electroshock. MindFreedom members testified at these public hearings on whether to regulate electroshock device.
Mass media have aired many perspectives about the tragic shooting in Tucson. MindFreedom director David Oaks points out media have largely ignored the voices of groups representing mental health consumers and psychiatric survivors, with very few exceptions.

Robert Whitaker on MFI Live Web Free Radio: Why are discussions about psychiatric drug controversies so often silenced?
On Saturday, 9 October 2010, MFI held a live, free Internet show with special guest author Robert Whitaker, and you can hear the archive. The US government has funded an annual meeting of mental health consumers and psychiatric survivors for the past 25 years. But when their conference organizers decided to address controversies involving psychiatric drugs, the federal funders stepped in to intervene. Here’s your gateway to the debate. UPDATE5: A 31-year-old member of MindFreedom International – Geetha Rathnamala – was being held against her will in a Pittsburgh psychiatric institution, and involuntary psychiatric drugging had begun. Geetha is a registered MindFreedom Shield participant, and an alert was issued. Many members and allies helped expose the abuse going on inside the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic (WPIC), which is part of the enormous University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Geetha is now free, and blogging about her experience. She thanks MindFreedom International for issuing the MFI Shield Alerts, and the many people who responded globally. [Update5 -14 Sept. 2010]

Whitaker is a critic of psychiatric drug company claims, with his new book, “Anatomy of an Epidemic.” US federal government officials objected to Whitaker keynoting Alternatives 2010 conference. An MFI alert 48-hours ago is called “effective,” and Whitaker is now re-confirmed as keynoter. Thank you MFI News readers!
“Undue influence of pharmaceutical industry” opposed by USA mental health consumer/psychiatric survivor leaders.
Key national mental health consumer/psychiatric survivor leaders at a national USA federal meeting on mental health consumer and psychiatric survivor inclusion issued a statement of “alarm” about the “undue influence of the psychiatric pharmaceutical industry,” and the “urgent necessity for more non-drug alternatives in mental health care.” Speaking for themselves as individuals, and not on behalf of the government, 18 of the 19 participants signed the statement.
