African American activists/ leaders within the CSX movement share their first-hand experience of systemic racism and how they have been working to bend the arc toward justice. They will address the need for change by sharing experiences (accomplishments and lessons learned), and how these experiences relate to other movements such as prison abolition, Black Lives Matter (BLM), and school to prison pipeline.

Celia Brown – Facilitator 

Celia Brown is an African American woman, psychiatric survivor, speaker, trainer. She is a long-time activist in the consumer/survivor/ex-patient movement. Celia is Board President of Mind Freedom International and founder of Surviving Race: The Intersection of Injustice, Disability and Human Rights. The support of her family and the survivor movement has shaped Celia’s experiences of alternative ways of healing, self-determination, and supporting and promoting human rights of people with psychiatric histories.

Cindi Fisher is a fierce and passionate advocate for community transformation and self-transformation! Her path is dedicated to attending to self awareness, capacity, and expansion, while creating inclusion, wherein each member of the community has a voice, is welcomed, honored, matters and belongs!

 

Jonathan P. Edwards plays an integral role in advancing peer workforce development in mental health and substance use treatment settings. He received his Ph.D. in Social Welfare from CUNY Graduate Center, his Master’s in Social Work from Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College and is also a Certified Peer Specialist and a Certified Personal Medicine Coach. Jonathan serves on the New York Peer Specialist Certification Board and Mental Health News Education Board. In these various roles, Jonathan unapologetically embraces his identity as a black, gay man who has spent several decades contributing to organizations and initiatives serving black, same-gender-loving (SGL) identified men. Dr. Edwards identifies as a person in long-term recovery, which is the driving force that informs his worldview, scholarship, and professional practice.

 

 

Yvonne Z. Smith is a consumer advocate and master level facilitator in wellness recovery action planning (WRAP).  She mentored with WRAP founder Mary Ellen Copeland at the Copeland Center for Wellness and Recovery. Ms. Smith received her BA degree from the University of Maryland. Yvonne uses her knowledge to support recovery education and advocacy with a community of people with disabilities. She is co-founder and supporter of the Patient Council at St. Elizabeth’s hospital. In 2014, Yvonne represented people with disabilities in Geneva, Switzerland before the United Nations Committee to Eliminate Racial Discrimination with emphasis on psychiatric abuse in the United States. She founded two nonprofit 501c3 organizations, The Recovery Group and the Capital Clubhouse.  Ms. Smith is the current president of the Recovery Group, and Vice President at Capital Clubhouse, a membership-based community where people living with mental illness and/or trauma can recover to lead personally satisfying and productive lives. She is Chair of the DC State Independent living Council. Yvonne Z. Smith testifies at various hearings before the DC City Council and the U.S. House of Representatives on issues affecting persons with disabilities.  She received numerous awards from several local and national organizations.
