About the Conversation About the Conversation
Have you ever heard Dr Bill Bronston speak? He is a keeper of amazing facts of history and a planner of a medical model extraordinaire. When he was young he was the director of Willowbrook, which led him to say –
“You are somebody. You count, and you have to be in school, and you have to be in work, and you have to be in community, and you must be in fun, and you have to be able to have sex. And you have to live a normal life without essentially being discriminated against and isolated and marginalized and disappear in the society.”
Those words are as true now as they were over 50 years ago. Too many need reminders of those facts Today, as ever, he is a healthcare activist. He advocates for a single-payer universal health care system as a human right. He knows what is possible and he generously shares it. He will inspire you to take action. Plenty of time for questions. Clear your calendar, you really need to experience Dr. Bill, you will never forget him!
Dr. William Bronston spent three years as a staff physician at the infamous Willowbrook State School in Staten Island, New York, and was deeply concerned about the plight of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. He will share what inspired him to write “Public Hostage, Public Ransom: Ending Institutional America” and “A History and Sociology of the Willowbrook State School”. Hear from Dr. Bronston about the daring steps he took to close down the facility. Be inspired to take action to end institutionalization!
